Kinnaur Kailash Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Chandigarh to Sarahan
Distance: Approximately 268 kms. Elevation: Chandigarh (314 meters) to Sarahan (2315 meters)
- Upon your arrival at Chandigarh Railway Station/Airport, our friendly team will be there to welcome you. From here, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to Sarahan covering a distance of 268 kilometres.
- Drive through Shimla: Continue your journey through the bustling hill station of Shimla, the former summer capital of British India. Although you won’t have time to explore Shimla extensively, you can enjoy the scenic views of its colonial architecture and the surrounding pine forests as you drive through.
- Lunch Break in Narkanda: Pause for a delightful lunch in Narkanda, a charming town known for its apple orchards and panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayas. Narkanda is also a popular skiing destination during the winter months.
- Arrival in Bhimakali: Arrive at Bhimakali, located in Sarahan. Check into your accommodation and take a moment to unwind.
- Visit Bhimakali Temple: In the afternoon, visit the Bhimakali Temple, an architectural marvel and one of the most important religious sites in Himachal Pradesh. The temple, dedicated to the goddess Bhimakali, is an exquisite example of traditional Himachali architecture, with intricate wood carvings and a rich history that dates back several centuries. Legend has it that the temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where parts of the goddess Sati are said to have fallen.
- Explore Sarahan: Spend the evening exploring the quaint village of Sarahan, with its stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The village offers a peaceful retreat and a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions.
- Dinner and Overnight Stay: Enjoy a delicious dinner featuring local Himachal cuisine and settle in for a restful night at your accommodation in Bhimakali, reflecting on the day’s journey and the beauty of the Himalayan region.
Day 2: Sarahan to Reckong-Peo
Distance: Approximately 88 kms. Elevation: Sarahan (2315 meters) to Reckong Peo (2670 meters)
- Start your day with a hearty breakfast at your hotel in Sarahan before checking out and beginning your scenic drive to Reckong Peo. As you travel through Himachal Pradesh, enjoy the lush greenery, majestic mountains, and charming villages along the way.
- Upon arrival in Reckong Peo, check into your hotel and relax. This district headquarters of Kinnaur offers breathtaking views of the Kinnaur Kailash range and serves as a hub for exploring the region. After a brief rest, explore the vibrant local market, where you can shop for traditional handicrafts and savor delicious Himachali cuisine while interacting with friendly locals.
- In the afternoon, drive to Kalpa, a picturesque village known for its apple orchards, ancient temples, and panoramic views of the snow-capped Kinnaur Kailash range. Visit the Narayan-Nagini Temple and the Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Monastery to learn about the region’s architectural and Buddhist heritage. Day 3: Reckong-Peo to Ganesh Baag
Distance: Approx. 26 kms (16 km drive, 10 km trek). Elevation: Reckong Peo (2670 m) to Ganesh Baag (3500 m)
- Begin your day with a hearty breakfast in Reckong Peo before embarking on a memorable journey to Ganesh Baag.
- Reckong Peo to Tangling: Your adventure starts with a scenic 16 km taxi ride from Reckong Peo to Tangling. As you travel, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Kinnaur district’s rugged mountains and verdant valleys. Tangling, a quaint village, serves as the starting point for your trek and offers a glimpse into the traditional Kinnauri lifestyle.
- Trek from Tangling to Ganesh Baag: From Tangling, embark on a 10 km trek through enchanting forests and alongside babbling brooks, gradually making your way to Ganesh Baag. The trek is a blend of moderate ascents and picturesque landscapes, offering opportunities to spot local flora and fauna.
- Ganesh Baag: Upon reaching Ganesh Baag, you’ll be welcomed into a serene environment perfect for unwinding after your trek. Ganesh Baag is not just a place of natural beauty but also of historical significance. It is believed to be an ancient site where travelers and traders from Tibet would rest on their journeys. The area is named after the revered Hindu deity, Lord Ganesha, with a small shrine dedicated to him, signifying protection and prosperity.
- After settling into your tent accommodation, take some time to explore the surroundings or simply relax and absorb the tranquility of the area. The night under the stars, amidst the serene ambiance of Ganesh Baag, will be an experience to cherish. Day 4: Ganesh Baag – Kailash Darshan – Ganesh Baag
Distance: Approximately 18 kms (up and down). Elevation: Ganesh Baag (3500 m) to Kinner Kailash (6050 m)
- Start your day early with a wholesome breakfast at Ganesh Baag, preparing for an invigorating trek to Kailash Darshan. Our journey will cover approximately 9 kilometers one way, leading you through picturesque landscapes and ancient trails.
- Embark on a trek through the enchanting terrains of the Kinnaur district. The trail will take you through lush greenery, rugged pathways, and serene mountain vistas, offering a glimpse into the natural beauty of the region. As you ascend, the spiritual aura of the area becomes palpable, setting the stage for the sacred experience that awaits.
- Arrive at Kailash Darshan, where the revered natural Shivling of Lord Shiva awaits. This sacred site, perched high on Mount Kailash, is believed to be the embodiment of Lord Shiva’s divine presence. The Shivling is renowned for its mystical color changes throughout the day—white before sunrise, yellow after sunrise, red before sunset, and black after sunset—symbolizing the dynamic nature of the divine.
- The area around Kailash Darshan holds significant religious importance. According to Hindu mythology, the site is linked to the legends of Lord Shiva convening a meeting of gods and goddesses at Kinner Shikhar.

- Arrive back at Ganesh Park for a well

Day 5: Ganesh Baag – Tangling village – Reckong Peo
Distance: – Approx. 26 kms (10 km trek,16 km drive) Elevation: – Tangling village (2148 m) to Reckong Peo (2670 m)
- Begin your day with a picturesque downhill trek from Ganesh Baag to Tangling, covering approximately 10 kilometers. This trek offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape, setting the stage for the next leg of your journey.
- Upon reaching Tangling, board a taxi for a scenic 16-kilometer drive to Reckong Peo. Reckong Peo, the administrative headquarters of the Kinnaur district, is renowned for its spectacular vistas of the Kinnaur Kailash range and its vibrant local culture. Historically, Reckong Peo has been a significant trading post on the ancient trade routes between India and Tibet, and it remains a vital cultural and economic hub in the region.
- Check into your accommodation in Reckong Peo, where you can relax and reflect on your memorable Kinner Kailash trek. Enjoy the unique blend of traditional Kinnauri architecture and modern amenities and take in the serene beauty of the surrounding mountains.
Day 6: Reckong-Peo to Chandigarh
Distance: Approximately 329 kilometers, Elevation: Reckong Peo (2670 m) to Chandigarh (314 meters)
- Begin your day with a final breakfast in Reckong Peo, savoring the last moments amidst the majestic Kinnaur landscape. After checking out, embark on a scenic drive from Reckong Peo to Chandigarh, reflecting on the enriching experience of your Kinner Kailash trek.
- En route, enjoy the diverse beauty of the Himalayan foothills giving way to the plains. This journey not only marks the end of your adventurous trek but also offers a moment to appreciate the contrast between the rugged mountains and the urban charm of Chandigarh.
- Upon arrival in Chandigarh, your cab will drop you at your destination. As you conclude your journey, carry with you the cherished memories of breathtaking views, spiritual serenity, and the captivating landscapes of the Kinnaur region

- Make sure to carry warm clothing as evenings in the mountains can get chilly. Additionally, it’s advisable to start early in the day to make the most of your time exploring.
